James Braid is the man responsible for naming the state of "hypnosis". Although a misnomer ('hypnos' is greek for 'sleep'), Braid thought it an advance on the previous label of "Mesmerism".In the following link you will find an insight into Braid's techniques, which now may seem very, very odd indeed. He did at least kick the ball off though, and we owe a great deal to his inquiring mind .....
